Finnish Operator, Elisa announced that it will be building a '5G-ready' network in Jyväskylä by upgrading the base station hardware used in the mobile network.

The deployment of the network which will start this month will be completed by the end of August.

In the last two years, Elisa has been testing a number of 5G technologies as well as pre-commercial applications. The latest test took place in February, where augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications tested in the first 5G network with pre-commercial terminal devices.

Jyväskylä is the third city in Finland to have the upgraded network. In February, Elisa promised to complete a 5G-ready network in the city of Turku by the end of May, after it tested 5G connectivity in a moving car in Helsinki using its test network with download speeds of 1GBps and upload speeds of 400MBps.

The Operator completed the deployment of its first '5G-ready' network in the Finnish town of Tampere early this year.

Juha Peltomaki, Regional Director for Central Finland, Elisa
Using the latest technology, we will build a 5G-enabled network in Jyväskylä. It means that in the future, it will be easy to add features required in 5G services to the network, for instance, considerably faster data transfer speeds, short delay and functionalities needed in the Internet of Things.
