Central America will add 1.3 million new fixed broadband accesses within the next five years. As a consequence, the penetration of fixed broadband penetration in the region will reach 30.6% of households in 2023, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

The total number of fixed broadband household penetration will rise by 1.4 percentage points (pp) in 2018 compared to 2017, to 24.3%, reaching 2.9 million connections and will be highly driven by telecommunication operators HFC and Fiber investments. By 2023, GlobalData expects a total of 4.2 million fixed broadband lines in Central America, translating into a fixed broadband household penetration rate of 30.6%.

Ivan Maldonado, Technology Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Currently, cable modem has the largest share in terms of broadband access technology in Central America, accounting for 48.6% of total subscriptions, with DSL following closely in second at 44.7% of the total.

“Over the next five years, we expect cable subscriptions to increase at a faster pace than DSL, largely due to the push by cable operators upgrading to HFC networks and other telcos’ initiatives to expand more fiber.”

FTTH/B will be the fastest growing fixed broadband access technology over the next five years in the region, as subscriptions increase tenfold between 2018 and 2023. In addition to kölbi and Cable and Wireless there are a number of other companies investing in fiber-based rollouts including, Tigo and Movistar.
