Power Saving Mode (PSM)

Power Saving Mode (PSM) is specified by the 3GPP Release 12 as part of LTE evolution to cater for Internet-of-Things(IoT) and machine-to-machine(M2M) requirements. PSM enables terminals to enter a deep-sleep mode for long periods of time after notifying the base station. This new feature reduces significantly the amount of power associated with frequent communication requests normally sent by the base station.

PSM which forms the backbone of 3GPP’s MTC power-saving strategy is an important part of LTE CAT-0, providing significant improvements in terms of battery time for applications such as alarms, smart gas/water meters and other sensors, as well as device costs.
