TeliaSonera Norway Witnesses Increased SMS & Data Traffic During Christmas

TeliaSonera Norway released its network utilization information during Christmas, which saw its Norwegian customers sending 11.87 million SMSes and 490,800 MMSes on Christmas Eve. The number of SMSes increased 17 percent compared to the year before. However, the number of MMSes fell 16 percent for the same period. 

The data was taken from all TeliaSonera's brands - NetCom, OneCall, Chess and Lebara Group, for the whole of 24 December from 00:00 hrs, and until 06:00 hrs the next day (Christmas Day).  Its customers also used 20 GB of mobile data each second, up by 67 percent compared to the corresponding period last year. Christmas evening, between 2200 and 2300 were the most active times where customers were sending 250 SMS and MMS every second. 

According to TeliaSonera, Norwegians were using SMS, MMS, snapchat, Facebook and Whatsapp as major channels to message each other during the festive season.

An increasing number of Norwegians are sending digital Christmas greetings to each other. It goes fast, when many at once and displays real-time events from Christmas Eve, like when kids unwrapping gifts or a lucky winner gets the almond in the porridge.
