Tele2 Russia has launched Wi-Fi Calling service to its 4G customers in Moscow and the surrounding areas, enabling them to make and receive calls as well as SMS over WiFi hotspots at home tariffs wherever they stay.

The roll out follows MTS' launch of the service mid this month via a partnership with Samsung, allowing its customers with Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge smartphones to enjoy the service.

All Wi-Fi calls are charged at domestic rates even when the subscriber is on international roaming, said Tele2. By installing a special app, customers can make calls to any mobile phone numbers, numbers starting with 8-800, and fixed-line phones, and send and receive SMS.

The WiFi Calling app which is compatible with iOS (7 and later versions) and Android-operated (4.0 and later versions) smartphones, works in the background, enabling calls to be made through a standard phone interface.

The Wi-Fi Calling technology allows customers to use mobile services over active Wi-Fi connection in variety of places such as in the underground, on board of the plane, on upper floors of high buildings and in the basement where mobile network coverage might be unavailable.
