In order to strengthen the competitiveness of domestic companies, Hutchison Drei Austria and SPL TELE started the expansion of Austria's first, nationwide LoRaWAN network in autumn 2021.

LoRaWAN (Long Range WideAreaNetwork), together with 5G and NB-IoT, forms the technical basis for the IoT (Internet of Things) and thus for intelligent cities, energy-efficient buildings, smart environmental and agriculture, machine-to-machine networks and new digital ones applications.

Lower Austria and most of Upper Austria, Vienna and Burgenland

In addition to the nationwide LoRaWAN coverage of Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Vienna and Burgenland are already largely covered. The expansion in the remaining federal states is making great strides.

LoRaWAN from Drei is particularly suitable for Austria's industry, energy providers, cities, municipalities, retail and facility management and saves companies from setting up their own networks for their locations. The management is 100% by Drei, including support for network servers and gateways in Austria, security monitoring and updates, software updates and 24/7 monitoring.

First reference customers LaaPlus and Nebily

The real estate company LaaPlus, based in Laa an der Thaya, uses LoRaWAN from Drei for smart meters on around 180 heat meters in order to regularly export consumption values via the IoT platform. Since the LoRa module is already integrated in the heat meter, it was connected to the LoRaWAN network within a few hours. LaaPlus is very satisfied with the new solution and plans to expand it to include water meters.

The Viennese master company Nebily, which operates locations in Graz, Klagenfurt and Innsbruck in addition to the headquarters in Vienna, uses LoRaWAN for pest control as well as air quality and temperature monitoring via sensors in supermarket branches. After a successful pilot test, Nebily plans to roll out the solution throughout Austria.
