MTN Ghana which operates under the brand Scancom has won a 15 year 4G/LTE license in the 800 mhz spectrum band in an auction by the National Communications Authority of Ghana. The operator which has around 15 million mobile subscribers, paid a sum of $67.5 million for the spectrum. As part of eligibility criteria, MTN Ghana is required to have a minimum of 35% Ghanaian ownership in place within 13 months from date of license.
Currently, the operator is providing its 2G and 3G voice and data services using the 900Mhz, 1800Mhz and 2100Mhz spectrums. The biggest mobile phone operator in Africa has recently paid $196m in total to extend its operating licenses in Ghana and Ivory Coast.
